About Us

Nestled in the heart of Lancaster, the Lancaster Grand Theatre has been a cornerstone of the city’s cultural life since it first opened its doors in 1782. As the third oldest working theatre in the UK outside of London, this Grade II listed venue offers a rich tapestry of history, artistry, and community spirit. With its stunning 460-seat auditorium, Lancaster Grand is a beloved place where memories are made and live performances come to life.

Steeped in history and surrounded by the charm of its Edwardian design, the Lancaster Grand Theatre continues to serve as a hub for the performing arts, offering a diverse programme of shows throughout the year. From amateur productions by Lancaster Footlights and local amatuer dramtics societies to performances by professional touring companies, the theatre provides a stage for both local talent and world-class acts.

Whether you’re here to witness a dazzling musical, an unforgettable drama, or a local community production, Lancaster Grand Theatre invites you to be part of something truly special. It is a place where stories are told, artistry is celebrated, and the community comes together.

Key Milestones in Our History:

  • 1897: Renowned theatre architect Frank Matcham designed and supervised an extensive re-modelling of the stage and auditorium, elevating the theatre's grandeur.

  • 1908: A devastating fire destroyed much of the interior, including Matcham's work. Yet, the theatre rose from the ashes, reopening in under eight months with an Edwardian design that has remained intact to this day.

  • 1951: ABC Cinemas sold the theatre to Lancaster Footlights, securing the venue for amateur drama and music. The theatre continued to thrive under this new ownership.

  • 1959: Lancaster Footlights faced a Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO) due to development plans for a relief road and industrial zone. The society successfully opposed the CPO, resulting in its cancellation in 1960.

  • 1978: The theatre’s emergency gas lighting system was deemed unsafe, threatening its future. Fundraising efforts ensured the installation of a new electrical system, keeping the theatre operational.

  • 1979: As the building’s deterioration became evident, Lancaster Footlights launched its first major fundraising campaign. Over the years, additional campaigns raised over £667,000, funding essential restoration projects and ensuring the venue's continued preservation.

  • 2021: Major restoration works were completed on the façade of the Lancaster Grand Theatre, including new signage, updated lighting, and beautiful improvements to the exterior. These works were carried out in partnership with Hpa Chartered Architects, with design advice and grant funding support from the Lancaster High Streets Heritage Action Zone. The project was funded by Historic England and Lancaster City Council.

Today’s Theatre:

Through ongoing restoration efforts, the Lancaster Grand Theatre stands in the best condition since its 1908 rebuild. The theatre is now one of the North West’s premier venues for amateur drama, music, dance, and professional touring companies.

Our Mission & Values

The Lancaster Footlights & Grand Theatre Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) operates the theatre, relying solely on fundraising to remain viable. Our income is generated through hosting professional acts, providing a space for local societies, and presenting our own Footlights performances.

Footlights membership offers individuals the opportunity to participate in all areas of theatre production, from acting and directing to technical roles in lighting, sound, set design, and more.
