Backstage Boost: New Storage Installation Transforms Theatre Store

This weekend marked an exciting step forward for Lancaster Footlights & Grand Theatre as large props returned to our off-site storage facility, following a major refurbishment and the installation of a new raised storage area.

The two-month project, delivered in partnership with local specialists Quay Fabrications, was undertaken to improve safety, accessibility, and capacity. After a careful search for the right contractor, we were delighted to work with the Quay team, who created a bespoke solution tailored to the unique needs of our busy theatre.

Mark Hutton, Chair of Trustees, said:
“While Lancaster Grand Theatre is a fantastic venue, on-site storage has always been a challenge. Our off-site store is crucial, and these upgrades will make a huge difference – ensuring it’s safer, more accessible, and more efficient for everyone who uses it.”

The project saw incredible support from Lancaster Footlights members, who stepped in to temporarily house materials during the construction. As props were sorted and stored, it also offered a chance to reflect on productions past, with many fond memories resurfacing.

As Mark adds:
“In theatre, there’s always just as much happening behind the scenes as there is on stage – and this upgrade is a perfect example of that!”
