Lancaster Grand Theatre Upgrades Stage with Harlequin Rocksure Surface

Lancaster Grand Theatre has invested in a major upgrade to its auditorium, installing a Harlequin Rocksure stage surface to enhance performance quality, consistency, and performer confidence. As the third oldest working theatre in the UK outside London, this Grade II listed venue continues to provide a hub for the performing arts, hosting a busy programme of professional touring companies, amateur drama, music, and dance groups.

The decision to renovate the stage was made during the theatre’s dark period late last year, when no performances were taking place. The theatre’s maintenance team had identified that the old stage floor required increasingly costly upkeep, and a full overhaul was necessary. After reviewing multiple options, the theatre approached Harlequin, world leaders in stage renovations, to explore solutions.

Harlequin recommended their Rocksure surface, a durable, stable, and consistently even performance floor suitable for dance, music, and heavy professional equipment. A Harlequin representative visited Lancaster Grand Theatre, conducted a laser measure and stage layout, and helped the team evaluate the best approach. Temporary test panels were installed and trialled with dancers from local schools and theatre members, who praised the consistency, flatness, and performance of the new surface, particularly for styles such as tap and ballet.

Mark Hutton, Chair of Trustees at Lancaster Grand Theatre, said:
“When we tested the Harlequin Rocksure product, feedback from dancers highlighted the value of a consistent, flat surface. For certain dance styles, that consistency really makes a difference.”

The full installation was carried out over two days by theatre staff and volunteers, guided by Harlequin engineers. Ryan Mason, Deputy Theatre Manager, commented:
“The dedication and efficiency of our volunteers in installing the new stage floor was extraordinary. With Harlequin’s guidance, we achieved exacting standards, and the results are superb.”

Harlequin Rocksure offers a matt black alternative to traditional stage surfaces such as wood or vinyl, while remaining extremely hard-wearing and water-resistant. Since its installation, the stage has withstood heavy professional equipment, visiting performers, and a full panto season, without requiring any maintenance beyond daily cleaning. The upgrade has significantly reduced ongoing maintenance demands while providing a safe, reliable, and visually appealing stage for all users.

Richard Maddison, Maintenance & Facilities Assistant, added:
“We now have a stage that everyone feels confident using, can support heavy professional loads, and looks fantastic from every seat in the house.”

With the new Rocksure surface in place, Lancaster Grand Theatre continues to offer an outstanding performance environment for artists and audiences alike, reinforcing its role as a leading cultural venue in the region.
