Lancaster Footlights fills the silence with Adult Singing Workshop

On Thursday the 24th April Lancaster Grand Theatre resonated with harmony as Footlights hosted an
evening singing workshop for adults. Many enthusiastic participants gathered to develop new and
existing vocal skills, connect with other singers in our community and collectively experience
singing in our theatre with two of our experienced members.

Creating Connections
The evening began with thoughtfully designed icebreakers that quickly introduced everyone and
promoted the exchange of their favourite music. Workshop leaders then guided the group through a
series of effective vocal warm-ups that were essential for preparing their voices while introducing
valuable singing techniques.
“Your workshop’s concept was different to what I’m used to but definitely better. Standing in a circle
was a simple idea but works so much better. Just on the whole I felt so comfortable, loved it!”
remarked one participant.

Harmony Discovery
One of the core highlights of the workshop was the focus on harmony singing. Many participants
were new to singing in parts, but with the careful and precise guidance from the workshop leaders
the group grew in confidence and produced some beautiful harmonies.
“I found the singing advice extremely useful especially as someone who hasn’t sang properly
before” shared one attendee. Another contributed “I’ve not sung in public for over 45 years (apart
from one karaoke session) so I’m a complete vocal novice. Encouraged by my partner I attended the
workshop and had the best time… I was made to feel welcome; the workshop was well structured
and with good guidance and instruction. I would love to attend any future workshops and may well
audition in the future.”

Showstopping Finale
To conclude the workshop participants learned “From now on” from The Greatest Showman. This
inspiring anthem provided the perfect opportunity for the performers to apply the techniques
developed throughout the evening.
“The friendly and inclusive nature of the workshops is great, those with less confidence were
allowed to find their footing without feeling exposed” noted one singer.

Future Possibilities
Following the positive response to the adult singing workshop and the several requests for
additional sessions, Lancaster Footlights is already considering options for future singing events
that occur more often.
“This was my first time attending a Footlights workshop and it certainly won’t be my last. I was made
to feel very comfortable the minute I arrived. The whole team were friendly and welcoming”
mentioned one participant.
Many participants specifically mentioned the warm leadership, with one remarking “A genuinely
relaxed and friendly environment. Annie and Cheryl are extremely enthusiastic.”
